What is meditation?

Meditation is any kind of deliberate focus, usually on just one thing or a narrow band of things. This clears your mind, slowing it down, leaving you feeling calm and relaxed.

What are the benefits of meditation?

About 20 minutes of meditation can have similar benefits to about 1-2 hours of sleep.  So, if you are sleep deprived because of young children, a snoring partner or you suffer from insomnia it’s just what you have been looking for!

If you experience stress throughout the day your body automatically reacts in ways that prepare you to fight or run by triggering the sympathetic nervous system.  This releases a cascade of natural chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol. This may be useful if you are in extreme danger.  However, if your body remains in this state for prolonged periods of time it can cause significant damage to your health and well being.

A number of health issues have been linked to stress such as anxiety and depression, high blood pressure, heart attacks, back and neck problems, IBS and ulcers. Stress also impairs your immune system making you more likely to catch infections or take longer to recover from illnesses or trauma.  I’m sure you can add a few more of your own problems to this list.

Meditation affects the body in the opposite way to stress, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system, restoring the body to a calm state, helping the body to repair itself, and preventing new damage due to the physical effects of stress.

When practicing meditation your heart rate and breathing slow down and your blood pressure normalises. Your adrenal glands produce less cortisol, you age at a slower rate, and your immune function improves. Your mind also clears and your creativity increases.  Yes, you heard right, regular meditation can slow the ageing process!

What is guided meditation?

It is a gentle but powerful technique that focuses and directs the imagination.  Some people find that it is an easier introduction to meditation, particularly those who have a very active mind.

It can be used to achieve specific goals by guiding people through a visualisation of a positive outcome for a specific event or to help with a specific problem such as insomnia.  However, it is often used just to take you to a quiet and relaxing place, focusing the mind so that the everyday world disappears.

You listen to a voice describing a scene, a journey or something, using language that calls you to use all your senses, to really engage your mind so you can really see, feel, hear, smell and sense where you are being guided to.  You can just focus on the sound of the voice or you can use your imagination to enhance the experience.  It’s up to you and whatever feels right for you - just go with the flow.

What will the guided meditation in the Relaxation classes involve?

The guided meditations that I will use in the Relaxation classes will initially take you through a gradual relaxation of all your muscles.  Because your mind and body are connected, your mind can’t help but become quieter and more relaxed when your body is relaxed.  I will then take you on a beautiful relaxing journey.  It may be through a forest or along a warm sunny, sandy beach.  Wherever we go, it will be to a place of calm relaxation.  I will then bring you back gradually, allowing you time to come back into the room and stretch, so you can leave feeling chilled out and relaxed but alert enough to drive home.

Meditating with other people can be more powerful than meditating alone.  So if you have tried meditating alone and have struggled, come along and see if you find it easier in a group.

If you have any phobias, for instance being in water, please let me know so I can avoid using taking you somewhere that you won’t find relaxing.  Alternatively, come and have a one-to-one session with me and we can resolve your phobia so it is no longer an issue.

One-on-one sessions

If you prefer to have a guided meditation on your own, at a time that is convenient to you, this can be arranged.  Please call or e mail me to find out more.

Alternatively, you can arrange to meditate with a group of friends as a one-off or on a more regular basis.
